October marks Black History Month and we're delighted to be bringing several classic movies back to Cineworld. It also coincides with the 50th anniversary of the birth of hip-hop and music certainly underscores the impact of the following films.

1. Do the Right Thing (screening October 10th)
Spike Lee's coruscating story of a Brooklyn-set racial clash has lost none of its urgency, underlined as it is by the pulsating insistent presence of Public Enemy's 'Fight the Power'. The slow-burning narrative revolves around Sal's Pizzeria, owned by the eponymous Sal (Danny Aiello), which becomes a flashpoint in the explosive collision between African-Americans, Italian-Americans, Puerto Ricans and Koreans living in the local community.
Possessing a striking cast of young and established faces, ranging from Aiello and Lee himself to Bill Nunn, Giancarlo Esposito, Rosie Perez and John Turturro, the movie builds a steadily anxious atmosphere. Playing against cultural stereotypes for both outraged laughs and sober introspection, it's little wonder Do the Right Thing put Lee on the map and established him as one of America's foremost filmmakers.

2. Boyz n the Hood (screening October 17th)
At the age of just 24, John Singleton became the youngest filmmaker to ever be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director. More pertinently, he became the first-ever African-American filmmaker to be nominated in the category. The movie in question is Boyz n the Hood, the trendsetting and topical drama about Los Angeles gang culture during the 1980s and 1990s.
The movie takes its name from N.W.A. member Eazy-E's song, and fittingly enough it stars N.W.A. member Ice Cube in a breakout performance. He aligns with a star-making Cuba Gooding Jr, and they form a memorable ensemble that also includes Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett. It adds up to an authentic and powerful tapestry that has as much to say about youth and coming of age as it does about racial stereotypes and identity.
3. Straight Outta Compton (screening October 24th)
If you're intrigued by the N.W.A. influence in the classic Boyz n the Hood, then be sure to experience the gritty and compelling origin story of the group that defined gangster rap. This sprawling music biopic centres on the disaffected Los Angeles youths who channelled their inner turmoil and mistrust of the police into controversial lyricism, breaking down the boundaries and inspiring marginalised black teens the world over.
Ice Cube's son O'Shea Jackson Jr. does an eerily good facsimile of his father and he's joined by impressive cohorts Corey Hawkins as Andre "Dr. Dre" Young and Jason Mitchell as Eric "Eazy-E" Wright. The excellent cast also includes LaKeith Stanfield as Snoop Dogg, Neil Brown Jr. as Antoine "DJ Yella" Carraby, Aldis Hodge as Lorenzo "MC Ren" Patterson and Paul Giamatti as manager Jerry Heller.
