Captain Marvel 2: Candyman's Nia DaCosta to direct

Deadline has announced that Candyman director Nia DaCosta will helm Captain Marvel 2. Brie Larson will return as the eponymous Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) hero, following her blockbusting solo movie debut in 2019. DaCosta will take over from the duo of Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden who helmed the original movie.

The script will come from Megan McDonnell, who has also written upcoming series WandaVision, starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany. It's not yet clear where the storyline will go; the first Captain Marvel did a switcheroo by revealing the apparently villainous Skrulls as the persecuted good guys. Meanwhile, Captain Marvel's own race, the Kree, were exposed as warmongering bad eggs. With the movie due for release on 8th July 2022, it may be a while before concrete details come in.

For the time being, we're eagerly anticipating DaCosta's work on the forthcoming Candyman. It's being pitched as a 'spiritual sequel' to the classic 1992 horror movie, which unleashed Tony Todd as the murdered slave turned hook-handed boogeyman. The new movie continues the character's horrific legacy as Chicago artist Anthony (Watchmen's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) returns to Cabrini Green, the gentrified former slum and site where Candyman was killed. When Anthony interprets the Candyman legend as a provocative art installation, he brings terrifying evil down on his head.

DaCosta graduates from her acclaimed work on TV's Top Boy to feature film. She's collaborating with Get Out and Us Oscar-winner Jordan Peele, who writes and produces the project. Candyman is currently set for release on 25th September 2020, so tweet us @Cineworld if you're planning to watch it.
