Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness adds new characters

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness comes as part of Marvel Phase Four, and will open new realms of wonder. Benedict Cumberbatch is back as the Sorceror Supreme (he's also in Spider-Man 3, opposite Tom Holland), and it was just recently announced that Rachel McAdams will also be returning. She plays the titular Stephen Strange's ex-girlfriend and medical nurse Christine Palmer.

Marvel chief Kevin Feige revealed some more tidbits as part of Disney Investor Day. Chiwetel Ejiofor's Baron Mordo will be back, having set out his villainous stall at the tail-end of 2016's Doctor Strange. Elizabeth Olsen will also be featuring as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlett Witch, imported from her new Disney+ series WandaVision. And it's been confirmed that screen newcomer Xochitl Gomez will be portraying America Chavez.

The latter adopted the mantle of superhero Miss America following her predecessor Madeline Joyce. Chavez is also the first Latin-American LGBTQ character in Marvel comics lore, so her big-screen portrayal may well break new ground.

Sam Raimi will be helming the project, making this his first comic book movie since 2007's much-maligned Spider-Man 3. (That's the non-MCU Spider-Man 3 to avoid confusion.) Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to arrive on 25th March 2022.
