Edgar Wright talks new thriller Last Night in Soho

Edgar Wright is busy prepping his next movie Last Night in Soho, which having been initially scheduled for 2020, now arrives in 2021. In sharp contrast to his rip-roaring Cornetto trilogy (Shaun of the Dead; Hot Fuzz; The World's End), Scott Pilgrim vs the World and Baby Driver, this is a twisted story of psychological madness. However, you can trust Wright, one of the UK's most singular filmmaking talents, to put his own unique spin on horrific material.

“It will feel very different to my other films,” Wright tells Empire. “But I’ve always liked films which have a slow burn into something else, and a lot of my movies have that feeling. Last Night starts in a more psychological realm and then starts to get increasingly intense as it goes along. And I always like to gravitate towards making a film in genres I miss, and there’s a certain type of psychological horror film that you got more in the ‘60s and ‘70s, that have something of an operatic nature. I’m using that kind of visual grammar.”

Jojo Rabbit's Thomasin McKenzie plays a 1960s London fashion designer whose world begins to fall apart. Time travel seemingly becomes fused with madness as she encounters a host of oddball characters, played by the likes of The Witch's Anya Taylor-Joy and former Doctor Who Matt Smith. There's also room for British veterans Diana Rigg (Game of Thrones) and Terence Stamp (The Limey).

"There’s something I have in common with the lead character in that I’m afflicted with nostalgia for a decade I didn’t live in," Wright told Empire. "You think about ‘60s London — what would that be like? And the reality of the decade is maybe not what she imagines. It has an element of ‘be careful what you wish for.'"

What we're wishing for is a bold and brilliant psychological chiller that will blow away the cobwebs of 2020. As mentioned, Last Night in Soho was initially set for release in September of this year.
