Hamilton is available to stream on Disney+ this summer

There's a treat headed your way this July: you can stream the filmed version of Broadway smash hit Hamilton. Here's what you need to know.

What is Hamilton?

Quite simply, the show reimagines the true story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton as a vibrant musical extravaganza. Hamilton's rise to the status of esteemed statesman plays out against the backdrop of the American War of Independence. The production criss-crosses period detail with catchy hip-hop and rap to put a unique spin on Hamilton's remarkable life.

Devised by and starring Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton made its debut in 2015 as an Off-Broadway production, before later going on to achieve worldwide acclaim. Miranda's inventive staging and witty twisting of American history saw the show garlanded with numerous awards, including a record 11 Tony awards. It also received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The show has featured a revolving door of actors throughout its various iterations, many of whom have gone on to become established names. Miranda himself later wrote the songs for Disney hit Moana and starred in Mary Poppins Returns. Other actors that have starred include Frozen's Jonathan Groff, Black-ish's Daveed Diggs and Waves' Renee Elise Goldsberry.

It is the 2016 stage recording of the original Broadway production, filmed at the Richard Rogers Theatre in New York.
