Last Night in Soho: what we know about Edgar Wright's new movie

Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright's new horror-thriller Last Night in Soho has been moved to 2021. But what do we know about it? Scroll down to find out.

What is the story of Last Night in Soho?

Following the success of his Cornetto Trilogy (Shaun, Hot Fuzz and The World's End), plus Scott Pilgrim vs the World and Baby Driver, writer-director Edgar Wright now settles on sinister territory.

Last Night in Soho is based on an original story idea by Wright, which he later adapted into a screenplay with 1917 writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns. But outside of the basic concept, we don't really know too much about it.

According to the official synopsis (relayed via Deadline), the film centres on "a young girl, who is passionate about fashion design, who mysteriously enters the 1960s where she encounters her idol, a dazzling wannabe singer. But 1960s London is not what it seems, and time seems to fall apart with shady consequences".

Wright has already cited the influence of Roman Polanski (Repulsion) and Nicolas Roeg (Don't Look Now) on the movie. So, we can certainly expect some claustrophobic, atmospheric and more than a little twisted, not least because the story involves a girl named Eloise who can time travel.

"There’s something I have in common with the lead character in that I’m afflicted with nostalgia for a decade I didn’t live in," Wright told Empire. "You think about ‘60s London — what would that be like? And the reality of the decade is maybe not what she imagines. It has an element of ‘be careful what you wish for.'"

Who stars in Last Night in Soho?

Playing the time-travelling Eloise is Thomasin McKenzie, responsible for critically acclaimed performances in Leave No Trace and Taika Waititi's World War II satire Jojo Rabbit.

She's joined by Anya Taylor-Joy, no stranger to menacing material with her memorable performances in The Witch and Split. She and McKenzie will be joined by former Time Lord Matt Smith, and a couple of British veterans: Game of Thrones' Diana Rigg and The Adjustment Bureau's Terence Stamp.

When is Last Night in Soho released in cinemas?

Originally scheduled for a September 2020 release, Last Night in Soho has now been moved back to 23rd April 2021. Wright announced the news on Twitter, drumming up anticipation in the process.
