What's the story? The extraordinary true story of how investigative journalists uncovered an abuse scandal and cover-up.
It's the summer of 2001 and the Boston Globe has a new editor, Marty Baron (Liev Schreiber), who's curious to know why abusive Catholic Priests have gone unpunished. So he sets the paper's investigative Spotlight team onto the story. This is headed by Walter Robinson (Michael Keaton) and includes tenacious reporters Michael Rezendes (Mark Ruffalo) and Sacha Pfeiffer (Rachel McAdams).
Over the course of six months, they painstakingly piece together the horrifying truth about a systematic cover-up of child sex abuse. It's a fearless investigation that goes on to win a Pulitzer Prize.
Widely compared to the Oscar-winning classic All the President's Men, The Station Agent director Thomas McCarthy's richly detailed, emotionally involving drama boasts outstanding performances from its superb cast, who paint a compelling portrait of investigative journalism at its finest. Nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, this is urgent, unmissable cinema.

The Revenant
What's the story? Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy star in an enthralling revenge western from the director of Birdman.
Fur trapper Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is leading a hunting party in 1820s South Dakota when he's attacked and viciously mauled by a bear.
Rather than tending to his wounds, the frontiersman's traitorous companions, led by John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy), decide to abandon him. They kill his half-Native American son and leave Glass to perish in a shallow grave. But he survives. Now he must brave warring tribes, a savage environment and a ferociously harsh winter on a 120-mile trek to take his revenge.
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's raw and gritty follow-up to the Oscar-winning Birdman is based on an extraordinary true story of betrayal, survival and ultimate redemption. Its incredible authenticity stems from Inarritu's determination to film Glass's gruelling ordeal using natural light in genuinely unforgiving locations. The superb supporting cast includes Will Poulter and Domhnall Gleeson.
Nominated for 12 Oscars including Best Picture, Director and Actor for DiCaprio, this is immersive, unflinching cinema at its most epic.

Room
What's the story? Brie Larson gives an awards-buzzed performance in this acclaimed drama.
Ma (Brie Larson) lives within the confines of a single room with her young son Jack (Jacob Tremblay). For Jack, Room represents the entire universe and Ma loves him deeply. However, as the boy reaches his fifth birthday she soon takes a big risk by allowing Jack to escape into the outside world.
Afterwards, a remarkable emotional journey begins for both mother and son as their lives change forever through exposure to the world beyond Room.
Hinging on an outstandingly powerful performance from Short Term 12 actress Brie Larson, this moving drama has been nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Actress foe Larson herself.
It's an emotional celebration of the bond between mother and son, and marks the latest triumph from acclaimed filmmaker Lenny Abrahamson, who directed Michael Fassbender in quirky 2014 movie Frank.
The Big Short
What's the story? An A-list cast star in a dark true-life, Oscar nominated satire about four outsiders who profit from the financial crash.
In 2005, eccentric yet brilliant hedge fund manager Michael Burry (Christian Bale) spots signs of instability in the US housing market and works out how to make a fortune when the bubble bursts.
This attracts the attention of amoral banker Jared Vennett (Ryan Gosling), who joins forces with self-loathing money manager Mark Baum (Steve Carell) to make a killing. Elsewhere, two rookie investors lure retired trader Ben Rickert (Brad Pitt) back into the game to guide them to untold riches.
Adapted from Michael Lewis's non-fiction bestseller The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine, Anchorman director Adam McKay's scabrous black comedy reveals the astonishing true story of the cynical analysts who betted against the American economy. Brilliantly played and slickly edited, it tells a complex, potentially rather dry story in a hugely entertaining way and has been nominated for five Oscars, including Best Picture.

Trumbo (on release from Friday 5th February)
What's the story? Bryan Cranston gives an Oscar nominated performance in the true story of courageous blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo.
In 1947, talented, workaholic, wealthy Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston) is a Communist Party member who speaks up for workers' rights. This attracts the ire of such patriotic Tinseltown players as John Wayne and gossip columnist Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren). More seriously for Trumbo, when the anti-Communist witch-hunt reaches Hollywood, he's jailed for refusing to name names.
On his emergence from prison, the principled writer finds himself blacklisted and unable to work except under a pseudonym. Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston has been nominated for the Best Actor Oscar in this slickly paced true story of the writer of Spartacus and Roman Holiday, who paid a heavy price for standing up for free speech.
The great Helen Mirren is also on top form as the odious Hopper in Austin Powers and Meet the Parents director Jay Roach's smart and witty drama.
Creed
What's the story? Sylvester Stallone trains Michael B. Jordan in this visceral and compelling spin-off from the Rocky series.
After a lifetime of pugilism, two-time world heavyweight boxing champion Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) is now retired and living in Philadelphia. But life throws another curveball at Rocky with the appearance of Adonis Johnson Creed (Michael B. Jordan), troubled son of his late rival-turned-friend Apollo Creed.
Adonis never knew his father, who died in the ring, but is determined to follow in his footsteps. Rocky reluctantly agrees to become his trainer, even as he takes on an opponent more merciless than any he faced in the ring.
Fantastic Four star Michael B. Jordan reunites with Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler, who stamps his own gritty mark on the Rocky franchise with this gripping spin-off movie. For added authenticity, real-life English pro boxer – and former three-time ABA Heavyweight champion – Tony Bellew plays Creed's main opponent 'Pretty' Ricky Conlan. And in a triumphant return to his most famous role, Stallone has been Oscar nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
