The movie release calendar has been thrown into chaos in 2020. However, one movie that did manage to assert itself, to Oscar-winning effect, was Bong Joon-ho's Parasite. The triumphantly witty black comedy/thriller meshed a host of different tones with an onslaught of twists, in the process bringing the joy of South Korean cinema to a global audience.
In addition to its Oscar wins, the film was a global box office success, grossing more than $200 million. And yet while audiences were riveted by the movie, reports persisted of a black and white cut. And it's been confirmed that this edition of Parasite will be arriving on UK streaming services on 31st July. Here's the poster.
The black and white cut of Parasite has been described by The Guardian's Pete Bradshaw as having the tone of a classic British Ealing comedy. Whatever one's take, this is the perfect chance to re-engage with the deviously twisty story of the Parks and the Kims, a haves/have nots story that spirals first into dark comedy and later into tragedy.
Back in January 2020, the black and white edit of Parasite won the audience award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
