Soul: watch the new trailer for Disney-Pixar's upcoming movie

In need of a bit of cheering up at the moment? You can always trust those brilliant minds at Disney-Pixar to do the trick, and right on cue, they've released a new trailer for their ambitious-looking movie Soul.

Imagine a spiritual twist on Inside Out, and you're some way towards perceiving the nature of the story. Django Unchained's Jamie Foxx voices jazz musician Joe, who experiences a tragic accident on one of the most important days of his life. He then ends up in a kind of existential limbo known as the 'You Seminar', where souls are effectively picked and transplanted into children's bodies.

Of course, this being a family adventure, Joe escapes from this pre-ordained system, falling through myriad layers of dreamy otherworldliness until he arrives at soul HQ. Rather brilliantly, the architects of the spiritual scheme are rendered in sketchy outlines, lacking the wholesome quality of those squidgy souls they're responsible for. And, in an added twist, Joe is revealed to be still alive in his hospital bed, prompting a race against time for his soul to get back into his own body.

Sounds complicated? Well, you can always rely on the geniuses behind Toy Story and Coco to cut through the high-concept ambition with a genuine sense of emotion. In this instance, Joe teams up with cynical rogue spirit 22 (30 Rock's Tina Fey), and is offered the chance to look back on his life so far, a la Ebeneezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. What, you were expecting a Pixar movie where you didn't need to bring the tissues?

It's from Inside Out director (and chief creative officer of Pixar) Pete Docter, and we all remember how that particular movie wrung our tear ducts dry. Check out the trailer below.

Soul is released in Cineworld cinemas on the 19th of June. Let us know @Cineworld if you can't wait to see it. In the meantime, don't miss Disney-Pixar's latest movie Onward, on release now.
