10 Bank Holiday movies you need to see at Cineworld

With many shops closing, and the motorways likely to be congested with people going away for a few days, the August bank holiday weekend is the perfect opportunity to amble down to your local Cineworld cinema and watch a movie.

And there are some truly mouthwatering titles to choose from this year…

1. The bitey blockbuster – Crawl

When a massive hurricane batters Florida, a young woman (Kaya Scodelario) ignores warnings to evacuate and goes on the hunt for her missing dad. What she doesn’t realise is that an army of giant alligators has been let loose and is looking for human-flavoured snacks. Blood-pumping horror in the Jaws and Jurassic Park mould.

2. The riotous ‘tween’ comedy – Good Boys

Brought to you by the makers of Superbad and Bad Teacher, this coming-of-age comedy follows three 12-year-old schoolboys as they ready themselves for a party. As you’ve probably guessed, the trio aren’t ‘good’ at all – if you’re offended by the idea of kids swearing, fighting and watching adult movies, look away now!

3. The Tarantino epic – Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

What do you get when you cross Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt with Sharon Tate, Bruce Lee and the Manson Family murders? Quentin Tarantino’s incredible homage to late-Sixties Tinseltown, that’s what. The legendary Pulp Fiction director has hinted that Once Upon A Time could be his penultimate film, so savour the Tarantino goodness while you can.

4. The cute and quirky animation – UGLYDOLLS

Acceptance is the key theme in this animated musical based on the popular plush toys of the same name. American Idol star Kelly Clarkson voices the determined heroine who leads a bunch of rejected factory teddies on a daring mission to be paired up with human companions.

5. The creepy fright-fest – Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

There are echoes of hit Netflix series Stranger Things in this chilling tale, adapted from the bestselling book series by Trollhunter’s André Øvredal and The Shape of Water’s Guillermo del Toro. When a group of teenagers stumble upon a book of scary stories inside a haunted house, all hell breaks loose. Quite literally.

6. The all-action thriller – Angel Has Fallen

Gerard Butler returns as gravelly voiced Secret Service agent Mike Banning in this explosive third instalment of the …Has Fallen series. After he’s accused of trying to assassinate the US President, Banning is forced to go on the run while he finds the true culprit. Nail-biting to the last.

7. The family adventure – Dora And The Lost City Of Gold

Nickelodeon’s teenage equivalent of Indiana Jones makes her movie debut (played by Isabela Moner) in this live-action swashbuckler. Dora’s parents are kidnapped during a treasure hunt in the Peruvian jungle, forcing the hardy heroine to overcome puzzles, traps and mercenaries in order to rescue them. Benicio del Toro co-stars as the cunning fox thief, Swiper.

8. The high-octane car caper – Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw

If you’re looking for some squeals on wheels, this Fast & Furious spin-off has a whole tankful. A genetically enhanced terrorist (Idris Elba) causes panic when he threatens the world with a deadly virus. But he clearly hasn’t reckoned with the titular crime-busters (played by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham), who put their foot down in more ways than one.

9. The unmissable comeback – Toy Story 4

It’s nine years after we last saw them on the big screen, and Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and the gang have returned for a fourth adventure in the hugely popular Disney-Pixar franchise. This time around, they’re thrust into a dangerous assignment when their owner Bonnie’s new toy, Sporky (Tony Hale), is kidnapped by the sinister doll Gabby Gabby (Christina Hendricks). Watch out for the wonderful Keanu Reeves as daredevil stunt cyclist Duke Caboom.

10. The Disney classic – The Lion King

Can you feel the love tonight? You certainly will when you settle back to watch this slick CGI update of the classic Disney musical. With an all-star cast that includes Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, and a fabulous updated score, Simba’s story is given a whole new lease of life.
