The Batman director Matt Reeves shares first look at the Batmobile

Upcoming Batman movie The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, is said to be taking the Dark Knight back to his roots, exploring how he grows into his own legend. So, it makes sense that director Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes) has conceived the all-important Batmobile as a relatively more grounded, back-to-basics vehicle.

In a series of Twitter shots, Reeves has showcased the newly-designed Batmobile as something more akin to a sports car. Certainly, it's very different from the fins and swooping angles of the Tim Burton iteration, and the more utilitarian, tank-like 'Tumbler' from Christopher Nolan's trilogy.

To quote Alfred from The LEGO Batman Movie, it perhaps bears closest resemblance to the car from "that weird one in 1966". (In other words, the Adam West Batman movie.) The pragmatic design is surely an indication of how, like Nolan before him, Reeves is seeking to bring the Batman legend back down to Earth.

The casting of Pattinson will surely help in that regard. At 33 years old, he's the youngest actor to date to take on the role, and as the recent, critically acclaimed The Lighthouse demonstrated, he's more than capable of emitting a broiling sense of inner turmoil.

The Batman's fabulous supporting cast includes Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, Paul Dano as Edward Nygma/The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon and Andy Serkis as Alfred. The score is from the Oscar-winning Michael Giacchino (recently showcased in a behind the scenes test video), and the film will be released on the 21st of June 2021.
